Somalia: Drought and Conflict Displace Over 2,000 People in Jubaland, Gedo, Lower Juba
WHY IT MATTERS
The displacement threatens basic needs and education for vulnerable groups, while strained host communities risk escalating tensions over scarce resources.
What happened
Between 12 and 20 September 2026, consecutive failed rainy seasons and renewed fighting in Baidoa triggered widespread displacement across Gedo, Lower Juba and Middle Juba. In Lower Juba, more than 230 households—about 1,380 people—fled to Guryosamo village north of Kismayo.
In Gedo, roughly 120 households—around 720 people—moved to Dollow and villages around Luuq, including Yurkud and Bashira, after clashes between the Somali National Army and non‑state armed actors. The combined crises displaced approximately 350 households, totaling 2,100 individuals, half of whom are children.
The displaced include six persons with disabilities, 28 older adults, and over 200 school‑age children whose education has been disrupted. Host communities are strained by limited food, water and essential services, while humanitarian funding cuts have reduced the capacity of providers to respond.
