Mozambique Faces Complex Humanitarian Situation Amid Conflict and Climate Shocks

Mozambique has been grappling with a complex humanitarian situation in the first half of 2026, driven by the combined impacts of armed conflict, climate-related shocks, and disease outbreaks. Over 40,900 people were displaced in the northern provinces, while more than 870,000 people were affected by floods in southern and central provinces. UNICEF has been providing critical support, reaching over 33,000 people with health interventions, 53,700 children under five with nutrition services, and over 52,000 children with education interventions. The situation remains volatile, with insecurity in Cabo Delgado and forecasts indicating a likelihood of below-average rainfall and drought in southern and central Mozambique. Public health risks remain elevated, with cholera and measles outbreaks persisting, and health authorities implementing vaccination campaigns against poliovirus and strengthening preparedness for other epidemic-prone diseases.
