US Envoy Proposes Three‑Way Summit Between Putin, Zelenskyy, and Trump to Seek Ceasefire
WHY IT MATTERS
It marks the first direct leaders’ negotiation since Russia’s 2022 invasion, offering a rare chance to negotiate a ceasefire and reshape the conflict’s trajectory.
What happened
U. S. special envoy Steve Witkoff announced that he will offer Russian President Vladimir Putin a chance to meet directly with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and former U. S.
President Donald Trump in a three‑way summit aimed at securing a ceasefire. The proposal was unveiled at a press conference in Oslo after Witkoff’s meeting with Zelenskyy in Norway, hosted by Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre. Støre said Witkoff will fly to St.
Petersburg the next day to present peace terms developed by European and American partners and to lay the groundwork for a leaders’ summit. Previous attempts to bring Putin and Zelenskyy together have stalled, with the Kremlin insisting a meeting could only take place in Moscow. Zelenskyy stressed that any settlement must be designed by Ukraine and include genuine security guarantees.
