What happened
A single day after a telecommunications failure crippled air traffic across the Northeast, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced that the administration will request an additional $30 billion from Congress to upgrade aviation infrastructure and air traffic control (ATC) systems. The outage halted or restricted flights at Newark Liberty, JFK, LaGuardia, and Philadelphia airports, delaying or canceling roughly 9,500 U.
S. flights and forcing more than 100 diversions.
The proposed funding would replace aging telecom equipment that underpinned the ATC network, a system that proved vulnerable when the outage struck. By securing this investment, the administration aims to reduce the likelihood of similar disruptions and restore confidence in the reliability of the nation’s air traffic control infrastructure.
