What happened
From 10 to 25 August 2026, Lenakel Hospital on Tanna Island reported 81 cases of watery diarrhoea, surpassing the outbreak alert threshold of 34 cases and prompting an official outbreak declaration. The majority of cases involve children under five, with seven hospitalisations and one severe case; no deaths have been recorded.
Stool samples have been collected and are awaiting laboratory analysis to determine the causative agent. Public health authorities are conducting community awareness campaigns, enhancing surveillance, and managing cases to contain the spread.
Hotspot communities identified include Lounuloul, Imai, Isla, Lamtavekel, Loueiau, and lmarap.
