Former President Vassiliou Paved Cyprus’s Path to Europe and Peace

In 1990, former President George Vassiliou submitted Cyprus’s application to the European Economic Community, a move that became a cornerstone of the island’s modern history. During his 1988‑1993 term, he founded the University of Cyprus, restructured the tax system and civil service, and introduced pioneering competition and broadcasting laws. Diplomatically, Vassiliou met with U. S. President George Bush and British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, and his negotiations culminated in the United Nations’ Ghali proposals in July 1992, advancing the Cyprus settlement dialogue. After leaving office, he joined his political rival Glafkos Clerides’s EU accession team, demonstrating bipartisan cooperation that secured Cyprus’s eventual EU membership. His wife, former European Commissioner Androulla Vassiliou, praised his modest personal style and political courage, noting his willingness to bear costs for national interest. The conference highlighted how Vassiliou’s reforms and diplomatic initiatives laid the groundwork for Cyprus’s integration into European structures and its pursuit of lasting peace.
