Venezuela Earthquake Relief Efforts Continue Amid Challenges

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has continued its multisectoral response to the June 24 earthquakes in Venezuela, focusing on coordination and management of camps, shelter, health, mental health and psychosocial support, protection, water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH), information management, and prevention of sexual exploitation and abuse (PEAS). In La Guaira, the IOM maintained camp management and strengthened interagency coordination, supporting housing solutions, return, and reintegration processes. The organization also strengthened protection assistance in La Guaira and the Capital District through legal orientation, case management, psychosocial support, and specialized referrals, despite restrictions on humanitarian access, civil documentation barriers, and uncertainty surrounding reintegration and camp closure processes. In Mare Abajo II, the IOM supported priority improvements in water, sanitation, and hygiene, including the launch of a community laundry and rehabilitation of healthcare infrastructure in César Nieves, where differentiated access to showers was restored after identifying a protection gap during the period. The IOM also strengthened interagency and community coordination through livelihood initiatives, expanded protection, health, and WASH technical tables, and articulated with authorities and partners to support documentation, school preparation, and durable solutions for affected families.
