Hong Kong Launches Public Consultation on Renewal of Major Radio Licences
WHY IT MATTERS
The renewal of these licences will shape Hong Kong's radio landscape, affecting content diversity, market competition, and public access to information.
What happened
Hong Kong's Communications Authority has begun a two‑month public consultation on the renewal of audio broadcasting licences held by Hong Kong Commercial Broadcasting Company Limited and Metro Broadcast Corporation Limited, whose licences expire on 25 August 2028. Both firms have filed renewal applications.
Under the Telecommunications Ordinance, the Authority will review each licensee’s past performance and gather public input through an opinion survey, online public hearing, focus‑group discussions and other channels. The Authority will weigh the licensees’ proposals, sector and public views, and recent industry developments before recommending a decision to the Chief Executive in Council by May next year.
Members of the public may submit comments by email, fax, mail or attend the online hearing on 7 November. The consultation closes on 6 December.
