EU Commission Pushes AI‑Driven 'Only Once' Reporting to Cut Business Paperwork
WHY IT MATTERS
By reducing redundant paperwork and ensuring national laws stay aligned with EU rules, the AI‑driven system could lower costs for businesses and strengthen the single market.
What happened
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced on Monday that the EU will use artificial intelligence to streamline business reporting, a move aimed at cutting the repetitive paperwork that European companies face. Speaking at a closed‑door European People’s Party meeting in Taormina, Sicily, von der Leyen said the Commission will introduce an “Only Once” approach, letting firms submit data once and letting AI help public administrations reuse that information.
The principle is already part of the EU Inc. proposal, which seeks a harmonised corporate framework, but the new speech marks the first time AI is explicitly tied to the process.
Von der Leyen also urged member states to sign a pact that national transpositions of EU rules must not add extra requirements. The proposal could ease administrative costs and boost EU competitiveness.
