Sudan’s BOOST Project Launches Vulnerable People’s Plan to Safeguard Agrifood Gains
WHY IT MATTERS
By embedding a comprehensive safeguards framework, the VPP protects Sudan’s most vulnerable populations from displacement, land loss and gender‑based violence, ensuring that BOOST’s food‑security gains are inclusive and sustainable.
What happened
The three‑year BOOST project, led by the World Food Programme with CIMMYT, FAO and UN Women, targets increased food production and agribusiness opportunities for women and youth in Sennar and Blue Nile states. Central to the initiative is the Vulnerable People’s Plan (VPP), which identifies six at‑risk groups—internally displaced persons, settlers, women, child labourers, nomadic communities and others—detailing their specific vulnerabilities and the project’s potential impacts.
Developed through document reviews, expert interviews and gender‑segregated focus groups, the VPP sets key performance indicators, tailored engagement strategies and a grievance redress mechanism.
WFP will monitor implementation, report quarterly to the African Development Bank, and conduct annual performance assessments to ensure equitable benefits and risk mitigation.
