Royal Hawaiian’s ‘Pink Palace’ Turns 100 with Grand Makeover
WHY IT MATTERS
The Royal Hawaiian’s centennial makeover underscores the enduring appeal of historic luxury resorts and offers travelers a unique blend of heritage and modern comfort, enhancing Marriott Bonvoy’s portfolio and preserving a cultural icon.
What happened
The Royal Hawaiian, Honolulu’s iconic “Pink Palace of the Pacific,” is celebrating its centennial in February 2027 with a sweeping renovation that will keep the hotel open for guests. The Spanish‑Moorish‑styled resort, built in 1927, is undergoing a staged overhaul that preserves its famous pink stucco while modernizing every guest room. The historic wing’s 349 rooms will receive custom‑carved furnishings, new glass‑shower doors, and vintage‑inspired décor, while the 179‑room Mailani Tower will be fully redone with ocean‑facing lanais.
Public spaces, including the lobby, will feature lighter fabrics and furnishings. A new Historic Gallery, partnered with Matson Archives, offers twice‑weekly tours of 1920s artifacts. Marriott Bonvoy members can book the property with points, and the hotel is launching a series of anniversary events—an Ahaaina Luau, a time capsule opening, and themed parties—with tickets on sale Oct.
21. The renovation is slated to finish in time for the grand reopening and 100th‑birthday celebrations, promising a blend of heritage and contemporary luxury for future generations.
