Djibouti Secures $2 Million for Anticipatory Aid Ahead of El Niño Drought

The UN Emergency Relief Coordinator has earmarked USD 2 million for anticipatory actions in Djibouti, allowing UN agencies to deliver coordinated food, cash and other assistance to more than 53,000 vulnerable people, including refugees, before the expected El Niño‑driven drought worsens. A U. S. Foreign Assistance delegation visited the Ali Addeh refugee settlements on 16 August to observe WFP’s food and cash programs, boosting donor confidence in the refugee response. Meanwhile, WFP and the Djiboutian government are preparing to sign a Memorandum of Agreement that will transfer the Humanitarian Logistics Base to national ownership, marking a key step toward greater government leadership and long‑term sustainability of humanitarian operations.
