Tanzania Continues to Support Refugees Amid Movement Restrictions

This continued support ensures the basic food needs of vulnerable refugees are met, allowing them to maintain their dignity and well-being in a challenging environment.
What happened
The World Food Programme (WFP) in Tanzania has maintained its support for 88,534 Congolese refugees, including 2,881 Burundian protection cases, as of August 2026. Movement restrictions and limited access to livelihood opportunities have left WFP assistance as the primary source of food for these individuals.
The programme has continued to provide food assistance, with a 50% ration for general food distribution and 100% ration for nutrition support for children under five, pregnant, and breastfeeding women.
A joint learning mission with the Ministry of Home Affairs and WFP has been conducted in Dadaab, Kenya, to explore more efficient and responsive assistance models for Tanzania's refugee operation.
