What happened
A recent Cyprus Mail piece explains why a face captured on a phone can look markedly different from the mirror image. Lens distance alters perspective, making close‑up features appear larger and distant ones smaller. Phone software then adds sharpening, local contrast, HDR, and exposure adjustments that can exaggerate skin texture, deepen shadows, or sharpen contours.
Modern computational photography may combine multiple exposures, recover shadows, and apply local sharpening before the user even opens an editor, so two shots taken seconds apart can render the same face differently. The article advises photographers to first identify whether a problem stems from perspective, lighting, or processing.
Retouching should target only the photographic distortion, not the subject’s anatomy, and it cannot recover detail that was never captured. When a frame is too distorted or lacks detail, the better choice is to use another shot from the same sequence rather than over‑editing the flawed image.
