Africa Launches Continental Roadmap to Achieve Three Zeroes in Maternal and Child Health by 2030
WHY IT MATTERS
The plan targets preventable deaths and immunisation gaps that disproportionately affect Africa, aiming to translate evidence into sustained political commitment, financing, and quality services to meet Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.
What happened
The African Union has unveiled a continental political and delivery‑acceleration framework, the RMNCAH Roadmap 2026–2030, to address the continent’s disproportionate burden of maternal and child mortality. Africa accounts for roughly 70 % of global maternal deaths, nearly half of under‑five deaths, and more than half of zero‑dose children.
The roadmap centers on three zeroes: zero home delivery, zero preventable maternal and newborn deaths, and zero unvaccinated children, with adolescent health woven throughout. Three strategic objectives mobilise political leadership, align investment and delivery systems, and accelerate implementation of proven interventions.
Accountability will be measured through a seven‑indicator Presidential RMNCAH Scorecard and a broader continental dashboard, with the AU Champion, President Samia Suluhu Hassan, providing high‑level oversight.
