UN Urges Global Action to Shield Development Gains Amid Compounding Crises

Developing nations are grappling with a ‘new normal’ of overlapping shocks, as the Middle East conflict ripples worldwide through soaring energy, food and fertilizer prices, disrupted trade, higher transport costs and financial volatility. The resulting pressure forces governments to choose between protecting households with subsidies and price controls—which strain public finances—and allowing market prices to rise, which demands targeted support for the most vulnerable. Nearly 70 percent of reported interventions involve subsidies, price caps or rationing, and more than half of UN requests concern financing these measures. In response, the UN is coordinating analysis, policy advice, stronger data systems and catalytic financing, calling for affordable finance and coordinated international action that links immediate stabilization with resilient food and energy systems and long‑term investment.
