Cash Grants Empower Crisis-Affected Households to Build Livestock Livelihoods
WHY IT MATTERS
By turning cash into productive livestock ventures, the programmes lift incomes, improve nutrition, and build resilience for the most vulnerable, while reducing disease risks and fostering community dignity.
What happened
Cash grants empower crisis-affected households to start small‑scale poultry, ruminant and fish farms, a strategy highlighted in a UN OCHA report. Cash‑for‑livelihoods programmes release funds in instalments as beneficiaries progress, while training teaches them to choose healthy animals, quality feed and to spot counterfeit veterinary products.
The income generated lets families buy food, pay for health and education, and integrate animal proteins into diets, boosting nutrition. The approach also promotes dignity, social inclusion and one‑health practices, linking animal, human and environmental health.
Lessons point to the need for cash, not in‑kind inputs, and for multidisciplinary teams to sustain outcomes, especially for women, disabled people and youth.
