World: Criminal Networks Operate Without Borders, UN Migration Chief Urges Global Cooperation

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) Director-General, Amy Pope, has called on governments to respond to the threat of criminal networks operating without borders by working together to find solutions that cover all migration routes. Pope emphasized that governments must share information, coordinate actions, and fill gaps exploited by these networks. The IOM is urging governments to focus on three key areas: sharing information along migration routes, expanding regular migration channels for work and other forms of mobility, and investing in local populations to create jobs and provide aid after climate shocks. Effective migration governance also strengthens public trust by demonstrating order, equity, and tangible results. The private sector has a role to play in creating jobs and offering a safer alternative to abusive migration routes. The IOM is working with the UN Network on Migration and partners from the private sector, local communities, and faith groups along major migration routes.
