RVC to Review Measles, Rubella Elimination Status in Americas at November Meeting
WHY IT MATTERS
Maintaining measles, rubella and CRS elimination protects millions of children, prevents costly outbreaks, and upholds the region’s public health achievements.
What happened
The Measles and Rubella Elimination Regional Monitoring and Re‑Verification Commission (RVC) will convene its sixth annual meeting in Washington, D. C. , from November 10‑13, 2026.
The commission will review the epidemiological situation of measles, rubella and congenital rubella syndrome (CRS) in the Americas and assess each country’s elimination status. The meeting follows the RVC’s 2025 finding that endemic measles transmission had been re‑established in Canada, causing the region to lose its measles‑free designation. All other member states retain elimination status.
The RVC will analyze 2025‑2026 data on vaccination coverage, surveillance quality, laboratory results, outbreak response, and immunization program performance. Its conclusions will be forwarded to PAHO’s Director and published in a final report.
