European Parliament Intergroup Champions Youth‑Led Resilience in Post‑Summer 2026 Disaster Campaign
WHY IT MATTERS
Youth engagement and safer schools are critical for building resilient communities that can better anticipate, respond to, and recover from climate‑driven disasters across Europe.
What happened
As schools reopen across Europe, the European Parliament Intergroup on Resilience, Disaster Management and Civil Protection has endorsed UNDRR’s “Are You Ready?” campaign, launching a Back to School activation that urges policymakers, educators, parents and young people to engage in disaster risk reduction and school safety.
The campaign follows a summer of record heat, droughts and widespread wildfires that left more than 35,000 excess deaths, nearly 700,000 hectares of forest burned, and record‑low water levels in the Danube and Rhine. In a September plenary debate, MEPs highlighted the need to strengthen EU preparedness and are preparing a proposal to expand the Civil Protection Mechanism with greater funding.
The campaign stresses that safer schools are a foundation for resilient communities, equipping children with knowledge and tools to understand and act on risk. UNDRR will continue to support the Intergroup’s work and will highlight the campaign on the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction on 13 October, while a visit by UNDRR Special Representative Kamal Kishore to Brussels will reinforce the message that resilience starts at home.
