Global Polio Eradication Initiative Strengthens Use of Inactivated Polio Vaccines
WHY IT MATTERS
This recommendation aims to strengthen polio immunity and prevent outbreaks, particularly in high-risk settings such as Nigeria, DRC, Pakistan, and Chad. It also highlights the importance of improving access to children who are not reached by routine immunization or polio outbreak response.
What happened
The Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) has recommended that countries transition to a three-dose inactivated polio vaccine (IPV) schedule in routine immunization. This change aims to increase immunity levels, particularly in high-risk settings.
The third dose of IPV should be delivered preferably through hexavalent vaccine introduction, which combines IPV with other routine vaccines.
In outbreak response, a second fractional or full dose of IPV can be considered to boost mucosal immunity if an outbreak lasts beyond six months after the first dose.
