MLB and Sports World Honor 25th Anniversary of 9/11 with On‑Field Tributes

On Friday, Major League Baseball and teams across the sports world paused to mark the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks. In New York, the Mets and Yankees staged a meal‑packing event at Citi Field in partnership with the nonprofit 9/11 Day as part of the UNITE for Good initiative, just miles from Ground Zero. Players, managers, coaches and umpires wore caps with a “We Shall Never Forget” patch, while the Toronto Blue Jays added both Canadian and American flags. At Yankee Stadium, Aaron Judge, Gerrit Cole and manager Aaron Boone laid a wreath at the 9/11 memorial in Monument Park before the first pitch. A giant flag covered the outfield for the national anthem, performed by opera tenor James Valenti, followed by Lee Greenwood’s “God Bless America.” Customized base jewels and official lineup cards were also part of the tribute, and every home team observed a league‑wide moment of silence. Across the country, universities held memorial stair climbs and college football teams wore special uniforms to honor the victims.
