Yemen Crisis Escalates, Displacement and Refugee Numbers Rise
WHY IT MATTERS
The escalating crisis in Yemen highlights the need for urgent humanitarian support and protection services for those affected, with the UNHCR requiring $25 million to address the growing needs of displaced individuals and refugees.
What happened
The situation in Yemen continues to deteriorate, with a sharp increase in displacement inside the country. Between 1 August and 10 October, nearly 213,000 people were displaced, with Taiz hosting the largest share.
The UNHCR estimates that 231,000 people require protection services, including monitoring, legal assistance, and cash assistance. In Eastern Africa, 4,003 people have arrived from Yemen, with 3,807 refugees in Djibouti and over 196 in Somalia.
A recent boat capsizing off the coast of Djibouti resulted in the deaths of at least 139 people, including multiple children, with over 80 still missing.
