Yemen's Food Security Crisis Worsens Amid Rising Prices and Conflict

A recent report by the Joint Monitoring Report (JMR) in Yemen highlights the deteriorating food security situation in the country. In June 2026, inadequate food consumption increased to 64% and severe food deprivation to 36% nationwide. The main drivers of this deterioration are rising food and fuel prices, reduced purchasing power, and weakening livelihoods. Household coping capacity has also eroded, particularly in Ansar Allah (AA)-controlled areas, due to prolonged gaps in humanitarian assistance. The report recorded 23 critical and 453 heightened risk alerts in July 2026, with the largest share generated by the proxy food imports indicator. Food price pressures increased in July, with food price alerts more than doubling compared to May. The report warns that continued high fuel costs will sustain pressure on transport, food prices, and essential services. Conflict and displacement risks have increased in several governorates, and regional tensions pose a risk of renewed escalation involving AA and Saudi Arabia.
