New Zealand Government Invests $315,000 to Support Youth in Weather‑Affected Communities

The New Zealand Government announced a $315,000 investment to help more than 400 young people recover from recent severe weather events. Youth Minister James Meager said the funding supports six local organisations that deliver tailored programmes in Northland, Hauraki, Thames‑Coromandel, Whitianga, Ruapehu, Lower Hutt and Nelson/Tasman. The initiatives provide practical skills such as forest restoration, weather impact management, chainsaw operation, first aid, budgeting, cooking, driver licensing and digital inclusion. Participants also receive one‑to‑one mentoring, life‑skills workshops, and safe youth‑focused spaces to process emotional impacts. The programmes aim to re‑engage young people in education, prepare them for employment and build community resilience. Meager highlighted the positive outcomes, noting that the projects enable youth to give back while gaining employability skills. The investment aligns with International Youth Day celebrations, underscoring the government’s commitment to empowering young people to thrive after life‑changing events.
