Ukraine Launches Carpathian Eight, First Summit Draws Tusk, Vučić, Dan; Slovakia Absent
WHY IT MATTERS
The C8 summit signals a concrete step toward deeper economic and security ties in Central and Eastern Europe, potentially unlocking a billion‑euro worth of investment and trade agreements that could reshape regional cooperation.
What happened
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky unveiled the Carpathian Eight (C8), a new regional partnership that brings together Ukraine, Romania, Serbia, Poland, Slovakia, Czechia, Austria, Hungary, and the European Union. The inaugural summit began on September 18 in Ivano‑Frankivsk, with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić, and Romanian President Nicușor Dan in attendance.
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, who had announced a planned visit, did not attend; Slovakia was represented at a lower diplomatic level. The meeting also hosted about 550 business delegates.
Zelensky said the summit will focus on security, energy, logistics, and cross‑border economic cooperation, and that investment and trade agreements worth roughly one billion euros are expected to be signed by its conclusion.
