South Sudan's Abyei Region Faces Interconnected Climate, Peace, and Security Challenges

Abyei, a disputed area between Sudan and South Sudan, is grappling with interconnected climate, peace, and security challenges. Intercommunal tensions, displacement, economic hardship, and persistent humanitarian pressures shape the security environment. Changing rainfall patterns, extreme heat, flooding, and drought affect livelihoods and influence local conflict dynamics. These challenges constrain the UN Interim Security Force for Abyei's (UNISFA) operations, including mobility, access, and the ability to protect civilians and provide assistance. A joint report by the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs and the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute recommends integrating climate, peace, and security considerations into mission planning and supporting community-level adaptation and social cohesion.
