Tesla’s Solar Roof Cancellation Leaves Installers Facing Six-Figure Losses
WHY IT MATTERS
The shift forces installers to absorb sunk costs, reshapes the solar installation market, and underscores the risk of relying on a single supplier’s product line.
What happened
Tesla’s abrupt decision to discontinue its Solar Roof has left third‑party contractors who sold and installed the product scrambling for a remedy. The company stopped supplying solar tiles in August and informed its network of certified installers that only conventional solar panels would be shipped from that point forward.
Several installers reported that they had invested hundreds of thousands of dollars in the Solar Roof program, purchasing inventory, training staff, and marketing the product, and now have little to show for the investment.
The cancellation has forced these contractors to absorb the losses and re‑evaluate their business models as they pivot to conventional panel installations.
