Tesla’s Cybercab Deployment Faces Federal Safety Investigation

Tesla has begun deploying its Cybercab, a two‑seat, steering‑wheel‑free vehicle, in two states and opened a downtown Austin event for fans to ride. The car, which lacks brake pedals and other conventional controls, is part of Tesla’s Robotaxi network that is already operating in Texas and Florida. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has launched an investigation to determine whether the Cybercab meets existing federal safety standards. While NHTSA is working to update rules—tweaking eight regulations, including those that require parts unnecessary for autonomous cars—current standards still apply, potentially affecting the rollout schedule.
